I Need A Really Fast Growing Plant / Climber / Wisteria / Clematis Please?
I’d like to really quickly cover a wooden fence and iron gate with some kind of climbing plant. I remember going to a garden centre years ago and they said there was a clematis (I think) that grew ridiculously fast and out of control.
Problem is my garden is hardstanding so they’ll have to be planted in pots or troughs which I’ll be putting the lenth of the fence/wall. Any ideas? I am in UK if that makes any difference at all!
Thanks
If you’re looking for colour, i’d go with clematis (and try intermingling the colour) and also honeysuckle. they are beautiful, and they grow very quickly. they smell nice and they also attract butterflies/bees and birds in the fall.
I have a kiwi vine that is doing very well, though it only flowers tiny white flowers in the spring. it does grow fast though.
You might also want to staple an invisible trellis to the fence to ensure that the plants are attached to the fence. I bought a mesh that protects fruit trees and plants from birds. they work wonders and are easily hidden as the plant grows.
good luck!
oh, and for the pots… the clematis and the honeysuckle are both shallow rooted plants, you will have to cover the top of the soil for the clematis, as they will not take to direct sunlight. use rocks and or other plants to make shade.
If they’ll stay in pots try bougainvillea. If not cypress vine. There is a white flowery one that I thought was a weed until I saw one for sale at a garden center. It makes the whole back yard buzz SO loud with bees. It gets everywhere, and seedlings come up in random places… It’s just soooo not worth it. I don’t even know what it’s called, so that was no help..
Be careful with wisteria if you choose that. I covers your house and then heads toward the neighbours’. Clematis would work well, I think.
Jasmine….I have two in pots and they are growing up the post around my deck, it’s ridiculous how fast they crept. They give off a wonderful scent too.
